Heat pump systems should operate quietly. The only sound it should make is when it turns on and off and the gentle whoosh of air flowing from the vents. But every now and then, they’re likely to create some noise.

However, this doesn’t mean that every sound it ever makes is normal. There are certain sounds that mean your heat pump in Las Vegas is due for some attention from our professional HVAC technicians.

Although some of these noises will occur when you are already noticing poor performance from your heat pump, some of them could be an early warning sign. It’s important to pay attention to any unusual noises your heat pump makes to make sure a minor sound doesn’t turn into a major headache. Keep your ears peeled for any of these problematic noises.

Rattling Noises

Does it sound like something inside the heat pump is shaking about, loose, or vibrating? A rattling noise indicates something is either loose or about to come loose inside of the system. The sooner this is addressed, the better. You don’t want loose parts banging around as this has the potential to become a major problem and your system could possibly sustain more damage.

Screeching Sounds

When your heat pump is on, does it ever make a terrible screeching noise that sounds like something from a horror movie? This definitely isn’t normal. This aggravating noise occurs when metal scrapes against metal. For example, a loose fan blade could be banging around in its housing.

Hissing Noises

Don’t mistake this for the sound of whooshing air that you are meant to hear from your heat pump system. Hissing is an unmistakable sound of air trying to pass through a narrow area. For example, this could be the result of a clogged air filter. It could also be a sign of a refrigerant leak somewhere in the system which is an issue that warrants a call for immediate repair.

Gurgling Sounds

Speaking of leaks, gurgling noises can occur when the heat pump’s refrigerant line springs a leak. As the refrigerant line leaks and oxygen gets into the line, it may create a bubbling or gurgling sound.

Humming or Buzzing Noises

You may hear the sound of humming or buzzing coming from the heat pump. This is a normal sound, but it may be caused by an electrical issue in your system such as a stalled fan or an electrical disconnect.

Constant Turning On and Off

You may think that the sound of your heat pump turning itself on and off frequently is normal. However, it’s not. It occurs when the heat pump is short cycling or trying to complete a cooling/heating cycle and is unable to do so.

Whatever noise your heat pump is making, be sure to call us for prompt repairs. Letting these issues go unaddressed will only lead to bigger problems.
